How to use Software Center
This is a short how-to for using Software Center. Software Center is a portal for downloading pre-approved applications without searching for download links or admin approval. Speaking of admin, this is where you can also temporarily give yourself administrator privileges if you need to do so.
Before you begin, please ensure that your PC has the most recent Windows updates. If you are unsure of your update status, please log onto the VPN before checking for updates to ensure you receive the proper updates from Microsoft and NIS.
First, search for “Software Center” in the Windows search bar next to the Start/Windows button in the bottom left of your screen:
Next, click on Software Center to open the application:
Now you are prepared to select any of the application packages listed and download them!
To temporarily join the local admins group, click the “Join Local Admins Group” button:

Next, select the maroon “Install” button:

You may see several pop-up windows while the installation runs, but no action is needed by you during the installation. You will be prompted to restart your PC after it has finished, you will not be added to the admin group until you do this.
If you receive an error message stating you cannot install the requested software, please contact the NIS helpdesk at 979-317-2345, or helpdesk@tti.tamu.edu.
